AFFORDABLE HOUSING

For people we support, home is more than a shelter.

Volunteers of America has recognized the significance of housing as a foundation for life since 1896.

From our roots, we have grown into one of the nation’s largest and most influential non-profit housing organizations.

In 2018, Affordable Housing Finance Magazine ranked Volunteers of America #4 among non-profit developers and #29 among the largest for-profit and non-profit developers combined.

Our network now includes more than 500 properties in 42 states, including Puerto Rico, and our nationwide portfolio has grown to over 20,000 affordable units. These include large urban complexes, small rural developments, elderly housing, multi-family housing, and housing for those with disabilities. We place more than 25,000 people every year.

As a leading non-profit provider of quality, affordable housing – we also provide the vital support services needed within them.

Senior housing

We are a national leader in providing care and housing for seniors, including skilled assisted nursing care. For seniors, independence is very important. Our residents deserve the quality of life they desire, and our commitment to service-enriched housing offers them just that.

Veteran housing

Every veteran deserves a place called home. We offer a flexible continuum of housing and supportive services to individual veterans and veterans with their families. Our properties consist of studio apartments, one, two, and three-bedroom apartments and four-bedroom townhomes.

Family housing

We can respond to the universal needs of the individual and the family. We shelter those without homes, and we assist first-time homebuyers. By providing families with the space they need and services that help parents and their children thrive, we help families and build communities.

Persons with disabilities

Housing for persons with disabilities should reflect the specific needs and wants of the individual. The apartments should be more than sufficient, from both a design and operational perspective, and accommodate the resident’s changing needs. Activities, health and medical care, and transportation encourage independence. For us, independent living for persons with disabilities is a lot more than nursing assistance or apartment home choices.

We are a proud member of the Partnership for Sustainable Communities, a national non-profit group dedicated to helping make our communities environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable through community planning and development.

As one of the nation’s largest nonprofit providers of quality, affordable housing, we also provide the vital support services needed to thrive.

We create and manage low and moderate-income housing for people experiencing homelessness, families with children, older adults, veterans and their families, and people with disabilities, including physical and mental disabilities.

“I came to visit some friends here and immediately liked it so much, I knew this is where I wanted to be. I liked it because everyone was so friendly, and it felt more like home.”

-Jeannette, a resident of one of our affordable housing communities in Upstate New York
